Syria: Aid for over 120,000 people

ENG

An aid convoy carrying much needed humanitarian assistance for over 120,000 people is on route to the besieged town of Al Rastan near Homs.

ICRC delegate Pawel Krzysiek says: “We are going to Al Rastan today with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent. We are bringing 60 trucks of very much needed medical aid, water treatment materials. You feel the sense of urgency here.  Rastan is one of the besieged areas that has not been accessed for a very very long time with humanitarian supplies.”

Al Rastan, which borders the governorate of Hama, has seen heavy fighting during the past four years. Very little aid has reached the town.  The recent respite in fighting has now allowed for this.

The aid includes food parcels, medicine, delivery-kits for expectant mothers and wheelchairs. Water treatment materials, tanks, pumps and generators to improve the condition of boreholes and ensure steady supply of clean water to the population, will also delivered.

The 60-truck convoy is the combined efforts of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC) and the United Nations. More aid should be delivered in the coming days.

Footage of delivering aid to people in Al Rastan will be added during the day
