Afghanistan is one of the largest humanitarian crises in the world with more than 18 million people in need of assistance.
We have treated more than 40,000 people wounded by weapons in June, July and August this year and, every day, those injured by mines and explosive devices are treated by ICRC medical teams and physical rehabilitation centres.
The International Committee of the Red Cross has worked to protect and assist those in need in Afghanistan since 1987 and remains operational across the country with our partner the Afghan Red Crescent Society.
KEY FACTS:
· Our seven rehabilitation/orthopedic facilities in Kabul, Jalalabad, Gulbar, Faizabad, Mazar-i-Sharif, Herat, and Lashkar Gah assisted 80,000 patients in the first half of the year; 14,000 were women. 7,000 new patients were registered between January to June. 700 had suffered amputated limbs.
· With the Norwegian Red Cross, ICRC supports 46 health facilities, mostly in rural areas. Our medical teams have provided 497,000 consultations so far this year, including 155,000 for women.
· ICRC currently has a team of over 1,800 staff across the country.
