The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has today launched an ad-style video which illustrates the terrifying human cost of ignoring the Geneva Conventions and aims to raise awareness of international humanitarian law.
Wrapping up a four-day visit to Nigeria, the President of the ICRC, Peter Maurer, met today with Nigerian President Muhammedu Buhari. The two discussed the humanitarian situation in Nigeria, particularly in the conflict-affected North East.
More than two million people have fled their homes in north-eastern Nigeria since the insurgency began in 2009. According to the UN Refugee agency, 60% of those displaced have witnessed killings or physical violence as well as the destruction of their homes and communities.
A protracted conflict in the Lake Chad region has spread across four countries: Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon. Over nine million people need urgent humanitarian assistance. 2.6 million have been displaced, some of them multiple times.
